Still hitting all the wrong notes: Allegro voted Britain's worst car

17th July 2008

At its peak it was the fifth best selling car in Britain, but the Austin Allegro was always the butt of jokes.

And yesterday the 1970s British Leyland-built vehicle was branded Britain's worst ever car.

Twenty-four per cent of those who took part in a survey named it as the car they would least like to be seen driving.

It beat close rivals and other disliked UK models such as the Morris Ital, Hillman Imp and Rover 200 to the top spot.

Mat Watson, editor of iMotormag, said: "House prices are falling, inflation rates are soaring and with the looming threat of a recession, it's starting to feel a lot like the gloom of the 70s.

"So perhaps it is only right that the Allegro gets the recognition it deserves in our poll."

The Allegro was nicknamed the "All-aggro" due to its poor build quality, but during ten years of production 642,350 were sold, of which 657 were used by police forces as panda patrol cars.

And although it is 25 years since the last Allegro rolled off the production line, but official DVLA figures show there are still more than 1,000 registered in the UK.
